Using Technology without Technology Using You

I have loved playing with technology since I was a kid. My parents tell me that I fixed the church projector when I was 4 and that I was comfortable with the Apple IIe command prompt at 5.

But over the last few years, I’ve begun to feel like the tools that I play with are playing with me too. Have you ever felt like you check your email, twitter, or RSS feeds just a little more often than necessary? Do you consider yourself an awesome multi-tasker, but find it hard to concentrate while reading? Have you ever considered quitting blogging, facebook, twitter, etc?

If so, this talk might be helpful. We’ll give a brief overview of the history of technology and how it influences individuals, society, and the church, and then suggest some ways we approach technology without letting it take over our lives.

    About John Dyer

John Dyer lives in Irving, TX with his beautiful wife and awesome new son. He works at Dallas Seminary as the director of web development (meaning “main code guy”) where he also earned a theology degree. Visual Worshiper: Tools and Talent

Most of today’s corporate worship gatherings require some level of visual production. And typically there is tension in finding the balance between knowing what your technology does and how to use your technology as an art-form that truly enhances worship. We’ve all been shown what-to-do; now come learn how-to-do-it.

We will cover several tools for visual worship, and help you discover how they can be implemented in your worship space. Specific topics include main screens usage, Environmental Projection, lighting for video/worship, lyrics/fonts, using live video during worship, content, software, hardware, and much more.

    Conversations on Visual Worship

Let this dialogue be a catalyst in helping you to artistically and tastefully approach technology in a way that transforms you into a Visual Worship Leader that will lead your congregation in ways you’ve never imagined. Topics discussed will include:

THEWHY”: Now that we’ve discussed what tools to use and how to use them, it’s time to go deeper and ask the question “why”. In becoming an effective visual worship leader, one must take a step back and understand the question “why use visual media in church?” and be able to answer it.

VISUAL PHILOSOPHY: What is our philosophy in approaching visual worship for our local church? We will touch on a few elements that help make up one’s “visual philosophy”, such as the history of imagery in the Church, understanding your church’s theology, Biblical authenticity, and what it means to truly be relevant to your congregation.

VISUAL SILENCE: We always say that “less is more”. But is there ever a point where our church develops an unhealthy dependence on technology and visuals? What would happen if you were to turn everything “off” and simply come back to the heart of worship?

VISUAL WORSHIP IN THE GLOBAL CHURCH: What does “visual worship” look like outside the four walls of our own churches? What does it look like in a third-world country or a place where Christianity is heavily persecuted? Catch a tiny glimpse into what God is doing around the world, as it relates to visual worship.

About Camron Ware / Stephen Proctor / Nate Griffin

Camron Ware is the founder of Visual Worshiper, a design consulting company that guides and mentors churches through the journey of what visual worship means in the Church today, and how and why to use technology in worship to tell visual stories.

Environmental Projection is a foundational and innovative tool of Visual Worshiper, and churches and events throughout the country are implementing this powerful and cost-effective technology.

Camron is also a freelance lighting designer and VJ, with a heart and passion for visual worship leading; using technology and environments to create authentic, engaging, transformational experiences during worship.

For more information, visit www.visualworshiper.com, and the Visual Worshiper blog at www.visualworshiper.com/blog.

Stephen Proctor is a worship-VJ. He co-founded Grateful Inconvenience, Inc., a creative design company that focuses on live events, visual media, & film production. Stephen’s time is split between his active involvement in the Christian music industry, training the Church at large on how to effectively use visual media in worship, and traveling the world to capture the story of God’s global Church.

Stephen’s passion is to facilitate and train the local body in effectively and visually projecting the message of Christ and modeling authentic worship through the relevant and dynamic technology that we have at our finger tips today. When he is not on the road working with an artist or consulting with church leaders on the use of visual media, he is back in his Nashville studio dreaming up new ways to effectively stimulate and challenge the Body of Christ to put their worship into motion both in and out of the church building.

“As children of the God of the universe we should be the ones setting the standard for creativity in the public places! Everything we see around us in nature, in the uniqueness of every person… is a reflection of the incredible artistry of our God! Why would we not seek to honor this in our worship services? Everything that we do should reflect and project the truth of Him! My passion is to say as clearly and loudly as I can that God is exactly who He says He is! My purpose is to worship Him with all that is in me! Perhaps in doing this people will catch a glimpse of Him in the midst of what I do for a living.”

To find out more, visit his blog @ worshipVJ.com.

Nate Griffin is a creative director and producer who co-founded Grateful Inconvenience Inc. He is heavily influenced by his two loves: Art and travel! The son of missionary parents he spent much of his youth in Africa and has since continued to travel all over the globe with his work as a director and producer. With a life long passion for art he approaches is projects with an organic flare that often allows him to put a fresh spin on a design. His creative interpretation and desire to clearly communicat the message at hand is constantly brought to bare as he designs, consults and teaches in the church at large.

“My work is nothing more than the landscape of the particular mission field God has allowed me to be a part of. While it’s contours may change the mission remains the same. Life as Worship! The greatest evidence of God speaking is the church acting! Worship is the active outpouring of a purposefully cultivated relationship with a known and loving Heavenly Father. It is lived out, walked out and poured out in real life every day. The vast portion of our worship happens far from the confines of the church building. The evidence of worship is more often dirty hands and feet than the music and lights of our church services.”
